Texas Transgender Nondiscrimination Scholars (TXTNS) Respond to Governor Greg Abbott’s Anti-Transgender Letter
Texas Transgender Nondiscrimination Scholars (TXTNS) strongly condemn the harmful and exclusionary directives outlined in Governor Greg Abbott’s letter dated January 30, 2025. His insistence on denying the existence and validity of transgender and gender-diverse Texans disregards well-established medical and scientific knowledge, perpetuates misinformation, and fosters a culture of discrimination and fear.
Governor Abbott’s declaration that “the State of Texas recognizes only two sexes—male and female” ignores decades of research and the lived experiences of countless individuals. Medical experts, including the American Medical Association and the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, recognize that sex and gender exist on a spectrum and that affirming a person’s gender identity is essential to their mental and physical health. Policies that enforce rigid binary definitions fail to reflect this understanding and harm the most vulnerable members of our communities.
The Governor’s directive to enforce these discriminatory practices under the guise of compliance with state and federal law is a step backward for civil rights and equality. Furthermore, referencing President Trump’s recent executive order as justification for these actions only amplifies an agenda rooted in fear and division rather than compassion and progress.
TXTNS stands firmly against any effort to erase or delegitimize transgender and gender-diverse Texans. We remain committed to ensuring that educational institutions and public policies uphold fairness, dignity, and inclusivity. Discrimination has no place in our state, and we call upon all Texans to stand with us in rejecting these harmful narratives.
We urge leaders in education, government, and communities across Texas to:
• Advocate for inclusive policies that respect and affirm all individuals, regardless of gender identity.
• Provide safe spaces for transgender and nonbinary Texans to thrive and succeed.
• Educate themselves on the realities of gender diversity and the harmful impacts of exclusionary policies.
TXTNS remains dedicated to creating a Texas where no person is left behind. To our allies, we invite you to join us in this effort. Contact your representatives, share the stories of transgender Texans, and support organizations like ours that work tirelessly to promote equity and justice for all.
We will not be silenced or deterred. Together, we will continue to fight for a future where every Texan is seen, valued, and respected for who they are.
