Texas is on the verge of pushing out the very people who make our colleges and universities thrive.

SB 37 is a direct attack on academic freedom, faculty governance, and intellectual diversity. It claims to improve higher education, but in reality, it undermines the ability of faculty to teach, research, and lead without political interference.

📣 As our President, Dr. Maria Gonzalez, puts it:

“With this legislation, I do not believe that the best and brightest will want to come to Texas. Students will go to other states for their education and faculty will not want to teach here.”

“SB 37 doesn’t create better academic freedom and shared governance—it weakens the role of faculty in decision-making and would stifle critical thinking and intellectual diversity.”

Texas TNS stands firmly against SB 37. We believe that higher education should be a place where all students — especially LGBTQIA+ and marginalized students — can learn, grow, and be supported by thoughtful, empowered faculty.

📢 If we want a future where education is inclusive, innovative, and grounded in truth — we must reject SB 37.

This week, Texas Senate Bill 406 — a harmful, discriminatory bill that seeks to erase transgender identities by prohibiting updates to the sex listed on birth certificates — was not placed back on the Senate’s intent calendar. That means the bill is currently stalled, but make no mistake: the threat remains.

➡️ What SB 406 would do:

• Force birth certificates to list a person’s sex assigned at birth

• Ban legal updates to the gender marker for certain individuals

• Undermine the ability of trans Texans to live safely and authentically

🗣️ TexasTNS Vice President Autumn L. testified against this bill, standing firmly for the dignity, identity, and rights of transgender Texans. She joined a powerful chorus of opposition at the Capitol.

140 Texans showed up in person to oppose this dangerous bill. Only 17 came to support it. The message from our community is clear: we will not be erased.

➡️ Why it matters:

Accurate identity documents aren’t a luxury — they are essential to safety, employment, housing, healthcare, and daily life. SB 406 is part of a broader, nationwide push to legislate trans people out of public existence. We refuse to let that happen.

🛑 While SB 406 is currently stalled, its companion bills HB 477 and HB 2291 are still alive in the Texas House.

📣 TexasTNS stands in full opposition to SB 406 and any bill that targets trans lives. We will keep watching, keep showing up, and keep raising our voices — because trans rights are human rights.

Autumn, Vice President of Texas Transgender Nondiscrimination Scholars, delivered a compelling testimony against SB46, a bill that creates barriers instead of solutions.

💬 “This bill is a solution in search of a problem. It makes it harder for transgender Texans to access education, employment, and housing.”
🔍 Research shows that denying transgender individuals accurate IDs leads to increased job loss, housing instability, and worsened mental health. Autumn made it clear: legal recognition is a public health issue.
🚨 SB 406 doesn’t strengthen Texas—it weakens it by blocking access to financial aid, jobs, and stable housing. We must stand against government overreach that harms Texans instead of solving real problems.
